EuroGeoSurveys has published a new op-ed in the February 2026 edition of The European Files examining how Europe’s growing knowledge of geological CO₂ storage can be transformed into concrete climate action. The article explores how robust, comparable geoscientific data are essential to scaling CO₂ storage as part of Europe’s climate-neutral transition.

Moving from individual CO₂ storage projects toward a pan-European carbon storage system requires access to trusted and harmonised geoscientific data, which remains a critical bottleneck. The op-ed highlights the central role of geological surveys in addressing this challenge by providing independent, science-based knowledge on where secure geological storage opportunities exist, how mature they are, and how they can be developed responsibly and efficiently.

In this context, the Pan-European CO₂ Storage Atlas, developed by EuroGeoSurveys within the Geological Service for Europe (GSEU) project and made available through the European Geological Data Infrastructure (EGDI), represents an important step forward. The Atlas provides a standardised and harmonised overview of potential geological CO₂ storage resources across Europe, supporting evidence-based policymaking and strategic planning at EU and national levels.
