EuroGeoSurveys has responded to the European Commission’s Call for Evidence on the impact assessment for the future European Critical Raw Materials Centre, highlighting the need for independent, authoritative minerals intelligence to support Europe’s strategic decision-making.
In an increasingly competitive geopolitical environment, where major economies are actively securing access to critical raw materials worldwide, strengthening Europe’s strategic minerals intelligence capabilities has become increasingly important.
EuroGeoSurveys emphasises that a comprehensive intelligence system should combine industrial value chain information with a strong understanding of the upstream raw materials system, including Europe’s geological potential, resource base, exploration activity, and future supply opportunities.
Our response highlights the contribution that Geological Survey Organisations can make through existing networks such as the Mineral Resources Expert Group and the International Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Resource Management (ICE-SRM EU), delivering:
- Harmonised knowledge on critical raw material occurrences, deposits, resources, reserves, and exploration activity across Europe.
- Analysis of future domestic supply potential and emerging exploration opportunities.
- Integration of information generated through National Exploration Programmes under the Critical Raw Materials Act.
- Independent scientific and technical assessments supporting strategic investments, supply risk analysis, and resilience planning.
EuroGeoSurveys also underlines the important role of the emerging Geological Service for Europe, being established as the operational service arm of EuroGeoSurveys following its successful demonstration through the EU-funded Geological Service for Europe (GSEU) project. It has the potential to provide long-term geological intelligence services and supporting the future European CRM Centre with authoritative, continuously updated knowledge of Europe’s raw material potential.
